When St. Augustine was asked which was the most necessary of all the virtues he is supposed to have said, “Humility”. What was the second? “Humility”. And the third? “Humility”. It would seem that humility contains all the virtues. Jesus would undoubtedly agree. In today’s gospel he sees the guests pushing their way to the most prominent seats at a meal, obviously because they want to be recognized as important. Jesus says, “Everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled and he who humbles himself shall be exalted. Pray for the virtue of humility.
