Theme: In the World, But Not Owned by It

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The world is exhausting sometimes. It’s loud. Distracted. Addicted to approval. It tells us our worth depends on success, appearance, productivity, followers, or being right all the time. And after enough exposure to that, you can forget who you are.

But in our Gospel today, Jesus does not pray for escape. He prays for protection. Jesus says, “They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.” Think about that. He is reminding us of our deepest identity. Before you are a worker, student, parent, spouse, or friend, you are someone claimed by God. And that identity is constantly under pressure. The danger is not that Christians live in the world. The danger is when the world begins living inside us. When bitterness becomes normal. When compromise becomes easy. When we slowly stop looking different from everyone else.

Jesus never called us to blend in. At the same time, He never called us to isolate ourselves either. Christianity is not hiding from darkness; it’s bringing light into it. Jesus sends His disciples into the very places that will challenge them. Why? Because saints are not formed in comfort. Saints are forged in conflict, temptation, sacrifice, and love.

The world says, “Fit in.” Jesus says, “Be set apart.” The world says, “Protect yourself.” Jesus says, “Give yourself.” The world says, “Truth is whatever you feel.” Jesus says, “Your word is truth.” And maybe that’s the real battle today. Not whether we believe in God intellectually, but whether we actually allow His truth to shape us more than the voices around us. Because every day, something is discipling us. Social media. Fear. Politics. Entertainment. Wounds from the past. Pride. Someone or something is always telling us who we are.

Jesus prays that the Father would guard us from losing ourselves. And maybe that’s the invitation today: to stop asking, “How little can I give God and still be Catholic?” and start asking, “What would my life look like if I truly belonged to Jesus?”

Not halfway. Not publicly only. Not when it’s convenient. But completely. The saints changed the world precisely because the world did not own them. And that can begin here, today, with one honest surrender.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You did not ask the Father to remove us from the world, but to protect us within it. Help us remember who we are when the world tries to define us differently. Consecrate our hearts in Your truth. Give us courage to live differently, to love boldly, and to belong completely to You. Amen
