Young Christian Workers

The history and formation of the Young Christian Workers Movement dates back to February 2005 when the then associate priest Rev. Father Thomas Betuyre introduced the group from St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Kotobabi. After Mass there was a brief interaction with the youth to inform us about the need to help form a branch of the Young Christian Workers in St. Thomas More Achimota.

Many people expressed interest to be part and immediately an interim executive was put in place, made up of Mr. James A.
Adzewoda, Mr. Peter Sowah, Mrs. Georgina Twumasi and Mrs. Enerstina Agbozo, nee Domie. The determination from members to have the group inaugurated challenged the interim executives to work around the clock. Various ideas and input from members at meetings brought hope to the many young working class who did not know which group to belong.

At our monthly meetings, the numbers kept swelling up, youth activities began to see a facelift. YCW became the target group of the Church and so members agreed to hold elections and the following were elected into office: President, Mr. Kingsley Amoako, Vice President Mr. Stephen Dadzie, Secretary Miss Freda Doe, Organizing Secretary Mr. James Adzewoda Amegbletor, Financial Secretary Albert Akoto-Sasu, Treasurer Mr. Edward Azumatse, and Adult Collaborator Mr. Michael Agboyo.

Members then agreed with the interim executives as enshrined in our constitution to have the following as our patrons, Mr. Jonas Fudzi, Mrs. Victoria Arthur, Mrs. Joana Ortsin and Miss Alikem Adadevoh. After series of consultations with the patrons the entire membership agreed to have the group inaugurated. We wrote officially to the southern zonal office to which we belong and at the Southern Zonal Congress; delegates unanimously endorsed our inauguration.

In November 2005 a membership of thirty five (35) people were inaugurated, with reps from the National and Zone congress being present. We recount with joy how we mobilized funds to put foam and leather on the kneelers, fix street light at the junction to stop members being attacked after weekday activities, the provision of an Altar, flower vases for the sanctuary and a host of other things to mention but a few.
