Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In today’s Gospel, Peter says: “Jesus, we have given up everything and followed You.” You can almost hear the emotion underneath it. “Lord, was it worth it?”
Because following Jesus always costs something. Sometimes it costs relationships, recognition, security, or the life we imagined for ourselves. And after a while, if we are honest, many of us quietly wonder: “God… I gave You this. I sacrificed this. I stayed faithful here. Was it worth it?”
That is why I think the theme today is: God cannot be outdone in generosity. Peter lists what they left behind: houses, brothers, sisters, mother, father, lands.
Jesus does not deny the sacrifice. He acknowledges the loss. But then He says something incredible: “No one who has given up anything for My sake and for the sake of the Gospel will fail to receive a hundred times more.” Not just later in Heaven. But even now. That is the shocking part. Because Jesus is revealing something about the spiritual life: when we surrender something to God, He never leaves us empty.
Philip Neri is called the “saint of joy.” But his joy did not come from an easy life or from comfort. His joy came from freedom. He belonged completely to God. And because of that, he became incredibly alive. The people who cling tightly to everything become anxious and exhausted. But the people who surrender themselves to God become joyful. Because love becomes bigger than fear.
And I think many people today are spiritually tired because they are trying to follow Jesus without actually surrendering anything. We want discipleship without sacrifice. We want resurrection without the cross. We want Jesus as inspiration, but not as Lord. But love always costs something. A good marriage costs something. Real friendship costs something. Parenthood costs something. Priesthood costs something. Holiness costs something.
The saints tell us: every single time God asks for something, He is making room for something greater. Not always easier. But greater.
That is why St. Philip Neri could laugh, smile, and radiate joy.
He had already discovered the secret: nothing given to God is ever lost.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, sometimes following You feels costly, and I hold tightly to the things I fear losing. Teach me to trust that You are never outdone in generosity. Give me the freedom of the saints – the freedom to surrender without fear and to love without counting the cost. Like St. Philip Neri, fill my heart with the kind of joy that only comes from belonging completely to You. Amen.
