Akan Kuo

The St. Theresa Akan Kuo of SS Thomas More and John Fisher Catholic Church was formed in 1985. In 1978 some Akan Catholic residing in the Accra-Tema Metropolis founded a society of Akan Catholic lay persons called the Accra-Tema Akan Nkabom Kuo the membership of which was open to any Akan Catholic in the Accra Metropolitan Archdiocese. The society quickly spread to many parishes in the Archdiocese.

In 1985 one of members of the society at the Holy Spirit Cathedral Parish whose name was Emmanuel K. Manu(deceased) retired from his employment as a salesman of the erstwhile Pioneer Tobacco Company(PTC) and settled at Abofu, a suburb of Accra and joined the St. Thomas More Catholic Church community at Achimota.

With zeal Mr. Manu organized a branch of the society at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Achimota in 1985 and placed it under the patronage of St. Theresa of the child Jesus whose feast day is 1st October.

The foundation members were Mrs. Martha Amoah. Mr. Martin Amoah, Miss Cynthia Anin, Monica Opoku-Appiah (now Mrs. Boakye - Kutin), Mary Saah, Mary Benedicta Buako, Mr Wiafe, Mr. Atta Poku Dabankah, Mr. Sam, Mrs. Sam, Mr. Yeboah. Mrs Esther Owusu, Mr. C. E. Ato Gordon, Mrs Faustina Gordon, Mr. T. K. Acheampong, Mrs Doris Acheampong, Mrs. Esther Ofori Debrah, late Mr. Aligba, Mr Albert Orstin, Mrs Joana Orstin, Mr Henry Owusu late Mr Prince Amuah, late C. K. Sarpong, Mrs Agnes Constance Sarpong, Mrs Agnes Abebrese, late Opoku Asamoah, late Henry Tabi, Mr. B. J. Amuah, Mrs. Mary Asante and Augustus Kwesi Appoh. The past leaders of the society include late Mr. Emmanuel K. Manu, Mrs Martha Amoah, Mr. Henry Owusu, Mr. Joseph Kwame Aboagye and Mrs Christiana Addae(as Presidents), Mr. C. E. Ato Gordon, Mrs Boakye-Kutin, Mr. Francis Asamoah Benefo, Mr. Augustine Ofori, Mr Albert Orstin, Ms Sylvia Noamesi anal Nana Oppong Ababio (as Secretaries). Mrs Doris Acheampong, Mrs Faustina Amoah and Mrs Olivia Klutse as Treasurers. The current leadership includes Hon. Gabriel Yaw Amoah (President), Mr Joseph Opoku Acheampong (Vice President), Peter Kwakye (Secretary), Mr Emmanuel Osei (Financial Secretary), Miss Patience Graham (Treasurer) and Mr. Patrick Ofosu-Appiah (Porter). 

The society has among its aims and objectives the following:- a) To foster unity and fellowship among members in particular and in the church community in general; b) To help in the spiritual development of members; c) To assist in the promotion of the Catholic faith in members; d) To encourage members to perform their duties to the church diligently; e) To promote respect for the leadership of the church; f) To assist members participate actively in the Holy Mass in Akan language; 

The membership of the society is about 120.

The society undertakes a number of activities. These include its bi-monthly meetings, retreats and recollections. Beside, members and encouraged to participate actively in the activities and prpgrammes of the church and of the Accra- Tema Catholic Akan Nkabom Kuo.

The Akan Kuo has a singing group within it. This group regularly leads the congregation in singing during Eucharistic celebrations on Sundays and other days.
